3 Communication Mistakes That Create Unnecessary Conflict
Managing a residential care facility as an ARF or RCFE administrator means managing people, and wherever people work together, misunderstandings happen. It's reality!
Between busy schedules, resident needs, staff responsibilities, and unexpected challenges, communication can easily fall through the cracks. Sometimes, a small misunderstanding turns into a bigger issue simply because of how a conversation was handled.
Here are three common communication mistakes administrators can avoid that will save you time and headaches later.
1. Assuming Everyone Understands
Let's face it. You give the instructions every single day and explain what needs to happen, but at the end of the day you're wondering why wasn't it done?
It's oh-so easy to assume everyone understood what you meant, but what seems clear to one person may not be clear to another.
To avoid this challenge, take a moment to be specific about expectations, deadlines, and responsibilities. Ask questions to confirm understanding rather than assuming everyone is on the same page.
2. Correcting Someone in Front of Others
When something goes wrong, it's tempting to address the situation immediately. But correcting an employee in front of coworkers can leave them feeling embarrassed or defensive, making it harder to have a productive conversation.
Whenever possible, address individual performance concerns privately. Focus on the behavior or issue, explain what needs to change, and give the employee an opportunity to respond and correct the situation. Open conversations between both parties pays off in the long run.
3. Waiting Too Long to Address a Problem
Nobody enjoys difficult conversations. But when small concerns go unaddressed, frustration can build, assumptions can spread, and team morale can suffer.
I highly encourage you to address concerns early, calmly, and directly. Stick to the facts, explain your expectations, and work toward a solution instead of letting frustration drive the conversation.
Better Communication Starts With You
As an administrator, the way you communicate sets the tone for your team. Clear expectations, respectful conversations, and timely feedback can prevent unnecessary conflict and help build a stronger workplace culture.
You won't avoid every disagreement, and you don't have to. What matters is how you handle it.
Before your next difficult conversation, ask yourself: Am I trying to solve the problem, or am I simply reacting to my frustration?
That small pause can make a big difference.
